Wurstküche

625 Lincoln Blvd
Venice, CA | MAP

WHAT TO EAT: Classic, Gourmet, and Exotic sausages
EATER TIP: Getting fries? Pass on the Thai Peanut sauce

Okay, first things first — how the heck do you pronounce the name of this place?

The first part is pretty easy (said like "worst") but what about after that?

CUTCH? CUCKY?
Or maybe it's... COOTCHIE?

According to my friend Erik, it is pronounced "worst-ka-kuh" (it sounds like a word I'd hear in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls). But according to the YouTube video below, it's actually "woost-kuh-shya"... or something like that.

However it's pronounced, I finally tried this hot dog joint during lunch with some of my co-workers.

The first thing you see when entering Wurstküche is the display of various sausages. From classics such as Brats and Bocks, to the more adventurous such as Pheasant or Rattlesnake, the choice is yours (there's even a few vegetarian options). On the day I went, there were a total of 17 sausage options available — quite the purveyor indeed.

Usually siding on the adventurous, I decided on the Duck & Bacon with Jalapeño Peppers . Its description didn't tell me much (because I'd hope that ALL of the sausages are "succulent & packed with flavor") but whatevs, it has bacon. Plus, with each sausage you can choose up to 2 toppings — caramelized onions, sauerkraut, and either sweet or spicy peppers.

It must be the doubling of da dip, but I really liked the fries here. Luckily our group ordered a plethora of dipping sauces, my favorites being the Curry Ketchup and Tzatziki. I particularly didn't enjoy the Thai Peanut, the peanut flavor didn't mix well with the fries on my palette (try it on your own with a tub of PB and let me know how you like it).

All the initial ordering of food and drink is done right as you enter the door, kinda like a fast food place. If you thought this place has a big sausage variety (TWSS), their selection of beers is nice as well, mostly serving Belgian and German delights.

Thanks for the receipt, sir, but... where do I sit? Oh, I just turn here... into this dark hallway... and walk towards that ominous EXIT sign...

Whew! It was just my imagination after all. Tucked away is this communal dining area, which is intimately dim and lit mostly with natural light. Though cozy, there is plenty of room for multiple parties.

There's even a small outdoor seating area which has about 7 tables or so. Less echo, but more chance of bird poop falling on your head.

If your thirst outlasts your first drink, there is a bar conveniently placed right alongside the dining area.

Or, if you aren't drinking ze alcohol, grab yourself a glass of fresh cucumber-infused water (also within reach from the dining area).

The food will be delivered to your table, twas about a 15-20 minute wait for my party of 7. In the meantime, be a kid again (or, in my case, stay a kid) and draw on the tabletops which are lined with butcher paper.

Holy sausages!! This is about the time your belly tells your hands to reach for the goods... PRONTO!!

Because mustard makes a difference: choose from Whole Grain, Dijon, Spicy Brown, Honey Mustard, and American Yellow to enhance your already flavorful sausage.

My order: the "Ducck" & Bacon with Jalapeño Peppers, topped with caramelized onions and more spicy peppers. The portion is not huge but it's not small either; paired with a beer and a handful of fries, it can be a filling meal.

A closer look at the sausage: wasn't as juicy as I'd hoped, but not sure how juicy duck sausage can be. I couldn't taste any bacon because of the parade of peppers and the topping of dijon mustard (my bad, taste buds).

Golden, thick, and crispy fries with the variety of sauces. Most of the sauces paired well, but I also did some dipping with the complimentary mustards.

Remember my aforementioned buddy, Erik? We ate together. While I was surprisingly full with a normal order, Erik devoured THREE Bratwursts with Sauerkraut. What a scholar and a gentleman he is.
