California Donuts

WHAT TO EAT: Whateva floats yo' boat, it's a donut shop!
EATER TIP: Cereal donuts can get stale fast, so devour promptly

It was 11:09 PM and I had just finished watching an episode of Dateline (it wasn't the one where the spouse did it for the insurance money... or was it?). As I'm trying to figure out why that woman hired that guy to do that thing on a cold, stormy night...

"I want donuts."

I'm sure Stacy always wants donuts, but she requested them out loud.

"Uhh, I think shops are closed at this time..." I responded.

Stacy proceeded to tell me about a shop that wasn't closed that night. In fact, they're never closed!! Open 24/7/365, we drove to California Donuts in Koreatown.

Baked fresh and replenished as frequently as you hear a car honk in LA.

First thing I noticed upon arriving was the long line. The line squiggles a bit in front of the shop then plunges south around the corner. It was one of those lines that are so long you end up learning a dozen things about the person behind you (some of which you'd like to forget ASAP). It being a Saturday night, I didn't mind the wait which lasted about 30 minutes.

 Theeeeey're GREAT!! (woops, wrong cereal).

Because it's so dark around the corner, there's a rush of excitement that fills you once you reach the brightly-lit storefront. You begin to stare at the donuts, drool at the delicious thought of ending their lives, ...and then you kneel down to wipe the drool off of your shoes.

 Yes, that's bacon.

Yes, that's bacon.

I'm going to be honest — I am not a big donut fan. However, I will admit that I licked my lips once or twice and it wasn't to try and conceal my prickly chapped lips. There were so many visually delectable 'nuts in the shop (can I abbreviate donuts to 'nuts? you're right, that won't work...) but in homage to Homer Jay I decided on the Simpsons D'ohnut.

 Mmm...Simpsons D'ohnut.

The ordering is done by simply pointing with your finger (they won't be able to hear you behind the glass). It's like a real-life app except instead of crushing candies you're... ordering donuts.

It's no wonder why California Donuts has been a successful establishment for so long — they have affordable prices, friendly service, and a variety of reliable donuts whenever your heart desires.
